MUNICIPAL DECENTRALIZATION IN URUGUAY: A RECENT AND GRADUAL PROCESS

This article analyzes the main changes that have occurred in terms of subnational politics in Uruguay from the democratic transition to the present. It mainly focuses on the municipalization process that began in 2010. In a strongly centralized and unitary country like Uruguay, the emergence of new local governments represents a significant change in subnational political dynamics. The objective of this article is to review these changes and present some pending challenges.
