Results pertaining the implementation of a composting plant in Xalapa, Ver. Mexico, as a Best Practice. The municipal government installed a composting plant where the residues from parks and markets are treated, up to 40 tons of decaying vegetables and fruits as well as leaf litter. The composting plant is financed and managed by the municipality and is having support from the Veracruzana University, responsible for analytical control of the process as well and developing a leachate treatment. Market owners are appropriating the opportunity of a better management for their organic residues. A posterior phase of the project includes the leachate treatment to incorporate it into the agrofood chain as a fertilizer, as well as expanding the capacity of the plant.
